Back to school, with bitter-sweet feelings, we set our alarm for 6am. Could summer break really be over? It seems like just a couple weeks ago when school let out. In reality something like 12 weeks have passed. Really?
I love the fresh farm markets on the side of the road all over Skagit County, WA. Every time I visit my mom I always have to stop at the road side stalls for everything from vegetables to fresh bread and dairy products. Some even have super fresh fish, ice cream and other goodies. The one in this photo is Hedlin Farms on the edge of La Conner. La Conner is a quaint, small, touristy town on the Swinomish Channel connecting Padilla Bay and Skagit Bay on the edge of the San Juan Islands.
Anyone for a little King Salmon? How about this fish, it is 35lbs. Seriously, 35lbs. My brother and his girlfriend had quite a time trying to bring this one out of the water.
However, looks can be deceiving…

After a stop at the farm stall above, my mom and I were on our way home to cook for a family party. We drove off the rainbow bridge and onto the Rez and there on the side of the road was a truck with a sign “King Fish” and a slew of people stopping to check it out. We HAD to stop, maybe we don’t have enough food, as if.
Needless to say we purchased one of the fish, freshly caught, the only smell was of the water and super clear eyes. This was one fresh fish. The down side, it was 35pounds, still needed to be cleaned, and there was no way that our small soiree was going to be able to make a dent in this massive beast.
Expect some upcoming recipes for salmon and left-over salmon meals. Sorry Brandon, I had to call you out. I know that you wanted to claim the win over that fish, so sorry.
Most all of my memories are all about the food. This blog is not called passion4eating without reason. They say men think about sex every 6 seconds and that is about how often I think about food. This summer there have been some highlights in my food world, not all of them involve consuming but most of them do.
A RESTAURANT
Here we go! Poppy in Seattle for our anniversary, unbelievable! Jerry Trondfeld recently left the Herb Farm in Woodinville, Washington to start his own restaurant in Seattle on Capitol Hill. My husband and I made the trek to Seattle for a night of partying and eating. We walked the city flat before the night was over.
I love the Thali (small plates) menu. There are two each night, one carnivorous and one vegetarian. We ordered one of each because the offerings on both sounded delicious. And it was! The head chef, Jerry Trondfeld, brought out our food to the table. He had a very calm, distinguished, awe inspiring demeanor. We had a wonderful memorable evening, special thanks to my man, I love you!
